This past weekend was our Spring Round-up with the Back Country Horsemen of East Tennessee. Though the weather did not want to cooperate with us, we all had a great time. We had several die-hard riders hit the trials, and, though they came back soaked, all seemed to have had a great time.

Back Country Horsemen of East Tn is an affiliate of Back Country Horse of America. We were the first affiliate in Tennessee, and continue to grow each year. We formed in 2000 to advocate for horse trails in our area. Trail riding is a popular hobby here, but many people travel to other areas because of limited opportunities in the Cherokee National Forest. The number of trails were insufficient to meet the demand, and many of the trails that were in place had serious problems such as no parking, did not make a loop or connect to any other trails, poor maintenance, poor signage, etc. We chose to join with BCHA because of our close alignment in philosophy, including the principals of responsible access, volunteerism and education.

WHY BECOME A BACK COUNTRY HORSEMEN MEMBER?

At times, outnumbered on the trails and at hearings where land use decisions are made, retaining our rights of access and use of the back country requires a unified, coordinated effort.  Although most user groups accept equine use; there are some that would like to see equine activities prohibited in wilderness areas.  Join the organization that is working for you, to protect and expand your riding opportunities.  All trail riding enthusiasts are welcome!

The purposes of this organization are:

  1. To assist the various government and private agencies in the establishment, maintenance and management of trails and other back country resources.
  2. To work to ensure that public lands remain open to recreational stock use.
  3. To perpetuate the common sense use and enjoyment of horses in America’s back country and wilderness.
  4. To educate and encourage the wise use of the back country resources by horsemen and the general public.
  5. To actively involve youth in activities related to our purpose, and maintain a family oriented organization.
Tim Cable, host of Cable Country, at channel 11 TriCities News, WJHL,  joined us for the weekend, and enjoyed himself. From our camp-fire sing alongs, to our door prize drawings and our pulled pork dinner. Tim’s story ran Weds, May 6th on the 5:30 pm news edition. You can view the video here.
